Nigeria’s Flamingos proved bookmakers wrong as they stunned tournament favourites the United States via a penalty shoot-out, to qualify for their first ever FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup semi-finals.
The game played in the Indian capital city of Mumbai lived up to the expectations as both teams sized up to each other.
It was Flamingos that opened the scorer’s sheet in the 27th minute through a penalty from Edafe Omamuzo after Amina Bello was fouled in the box.
The second stanza resumed with the Americans dominating the proceeding but all their attacking threats were nullified by the Flamingos backline as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
It was straight to penalty kicks, Flamingos scored the first three kicks while the US missed one out of their three.
