Super Falcons midfielder, Deborah Abiodun has spoken out on how she felt after been shown a red card during Nigeria’s goalless draw against Canada in their opening Group B Match at the ongoing FIFA women’s world cup.
Abiodun was given the first red card of the tournament after a reckless tackle on Australia Ashley Lawrence.
Initially awarded as a yellow card, by the center referee, a video assistant referee, VAR, review overturned it to a red card in the 97th minute of the game.
Speaking on a Twitter space, Abiodun who regretted her actions said she was scared the team would have lost.
She thanked her teammates for holding on to the results, noting that, if the penalty had gone in, it would have been a disaster for her and her team mates.
“The whole team put up alot of work there, the penalty would have been a great lost, but thank God for using our goalkeeper to redeem us with her safe hands”
“I felt disappointed and sad, I was scared because I didn’t want to be the reason, the team lost”.
“I am thankful to my teammates for fighting so hard and gaining a point, despite being a man down”.
“Am also sorry to Ashley Lawrence, whenever I watch the tackle, I felt bad, I never meant to”, She added.
The super falcons starlet will miss the Super Falcons second group game against Australia.
The Super Falcons will battle the co-host nation on Thursday (Tomorrow) by 11am.
