ChampionshipJunior gymnasts from various parts of Ekiti State will Tuesday, April 4 converge on the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in Ado Ekiti to contest for laurels in the maiden edition of Ekiti State Junior Gymnastics Championship.
The one day event is sponsored by Ado Ekiti born former Nigeria’s Number 1 gymnast, Tayo Fakiyesi .While chatting with chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Ekiti State Qozeem Oladapo, the former gymnastics champion now based in the United Arab Emirates (Dubai) said the sponsorship was his own way of giving back to the society that made him
He added that such gesture from individuals and the corporate world became necessary in a bid to complement goverment’s sports development efforts adding that goverment alone could not take sports to the desired heights.
Secretary of the Ekiti State Gymnastics Association, Mrs Seyi Olorunnisola thanked Tayo Fakiyesi for accepting to sponsor the competition.
Mrs Olorunnisola said outstanding participants will be rewarded with gifts while such will be groomed to stardom by Ekiti state gymnastics coaches.
While thanking the General Manager of the Sports Council for the moral support, she informed that the event is organized by the Ekiti State Gymnastics Association in conjunction with the Ekiti State Sports Council.
Sponsor of the Junior Gymnastics Championship, Tayo Fakiyesi was Nigeria’s Number gymnast between 2014 and 2019.
He represented Nigeria at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia in 2018 having earlier won 4 gold medals and 1 bronze for Ekiti state at the 2012 National Sports Festival in Lagos.In 2015, Fakiyesi won a bronze for Nigeria at the All Africa Games in Congo.Unt his departure from Nigeria, the Ado Ekiti born former gymnast was the country’s gymnastics captain and Number 1 gymnast.
