Resurgent Heartland Queens fought hard to earn a well-deserved victory at hosts, Royal Queens in NWFL Premiership matchday 6 clash on Wednesday at the mainbowl of Sapele Township Stadium in Sapele, Delta state.
A masterly volley from petite winger, Chinwendu Orji in the 40th minute proved decisive to hand the Owerri landladies their first win in the six-week old Nigerian topflight.
The Owerri side had served the notice of their intentions to break the winless streaks after back to back barren draws against champions, Bayelsa Queens and Rivers Angels.
The Warri-based side did not disappointment at all despite going down on home ground at the end of 90 minutes as they put every foot right to grab early lead but found themselves being thrown overboard at each occasion by the visitors’ back women and goalkeeper fantastic, Uchechi Onyechere.
Heartland Queens’ talisman (woman), Lucky Mary proved herself as tormentor-in-chief of the opponents’strong women as well as the most potent and lethal finisher in the land at the moment.
Despite always being encircled at each time by two, three fiercers she still rose in the mix seeing right back, Kelechi Orgii to the height in providing the well tailored pass to workaholic, Orji to volley in the ball too far away from the reach of already displaced home side’s goaltender, Ngozi Dikeogu.
Heartland Queens went into the break as leaders as the hosts return with more determination to even scores but met a resolute yeoman’s performer and record chasing safe hands, Uchechi.Lucky Mary almost got the crowner deep into the dying minutes but the cross bar denied her of the glory.
Heartland Queens throw in more players into the fray, the duo of Favour Dagogo and Joy Enamino were withdrawn for Ezinne Wokocha and Anaele Chidinma but the job appears to have been well done courtesy of first half effort by Orji.
