National Stadium Lagos which has been in the news for the past few weeks has again made the headlines. Rain storm that swept across Lagos has brought down one of the four floodlight poles.

The pole which was remodelled as part of preparations to host the World Youth Championship in 1995, fell on some packed vehicles. The arena which in its glorious days was called “Sports City” has been in a bad shape for years. The fallen lamp pole has further compounded the problems bedeviling the once Nigeria’s major arena.

The Surulere based edifice was the leading sporting arena in Nigeria and it was commissioned on December 4, 1972 after which it hosted the 1980 and 2000 AFCON final.
