Lobi Stars returned to winning ways as they came from behind to stunned former NPFL champions Rivers United 2-1 in Group B, in the ongoing Naija Super 8 tournament.
The clash which was played at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, with Bala Abubakar taken charge of the team for the very first time since he was appointed as Lobi Stars head coach.
Rivers United took the lead through Liberian forward Albert Korvah, in the 32 minutes, when he stroked a delightful volley, as they went into the half time break with a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Lobi Stars continued to pressed on for an equalizer when their talisman Joseph Atule with an individual brilliance run in the 56 minutes, but his long range effort went over the crossbar for a goal kick.
The Bala Abubakar side then drew the game levelled, as they got back into the game when new signing, David Okoromi strike home a delightful volley by beaten off Rivers United goalkeeper Sochima Victor, before Chibuike Charles produced a remarkable breakhrough for the Pride of Benue, in the 90+8 minutes, when Sochima’s committed a blunder that gifted the forward to score the luckiest goal of his career, to helped Lobi Stars secured.
The victory now moves, Lobi Stars joint top in Group B standings on three points, alongside Akwa United, who secured a 2-1 win over Yobe Desert Stars earlier on.
Lobi Stars will hope to continue on their impressive run to the tournament, when they take on Yobe Desert Stars, in a Matchday 2 encounter, on Monday . While Rivers United will face a difficult tasks as they battle Akwa United.
