Naija Super 8 : Olisema scores as Akwa United secure 2-1 win over Yobe Desert Stars in Group B opener

Akwa United produced a brilliance performance as they secured a 2-1 win over Yobe Desert Stars, in a Group B encounter of the ongoing Naija Super 8 tournament.

The game which took place at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, saw the Fatai Osho led side, who came into the tournament as one of the two wildcard teams picked to participate in the tournament.

The promise keepers took the lead through defender Ebuka Anthony, in the 34 minutes, when he header its home a from James Ajako’s delivery from a corner kick. As the defender scored on his debut since joining from Rangers International.

Before Cyril Olisema doubled the lead 2-0, with a brilliance thunderbolt strike outside the box in the 42 minutes as they went into the half time break with a comfortable lead.

In the second half, Akwa United continued to dominate the possession of the ball when the Referee awarded them a penalty after Solomon Chigoziem beaten off two Yobe Desert Stars defenders before he was brought down inside the box in the 50 minutes.

However, Olisema failed could not converted the spot kick after it was saved by the Yobe Stars goalkeeper Isa Ismail.

However, the Emmanuel Olowo pulled a goal back through a delightful free kick strike by right back Emmanuel James in the 56 minutes, but it was not enough to helped the team, as Akwa United defence held on to secured a vital win in the opening Group B encounter.

The victory moves Fatai Osho side to top in the group and will take on Rivers United in a Matchday 2 clash on Sunday while Yobe Desert Stars will play tackle against Lobi Stars.
