NPFL:Collins’ header gave Akwa United a slender victory over Gombe United

A solitary strike from Uchenna Collins was all Akwa United needed to defeat Gombe United in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) game on Thursday.

Akwa United needed three points to improve their position on the Group A while the Savannah Scorpions wanted something positive at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

It was Uchenna’s effort that helped the Promise Keepers win 1-0 in Uyo.

He sent a brilliant header into the net from James Ajako’s assist on eight minutes.The hosts continued to press for the second.

Moses Effiong drove forward with great pace and cut inside nicely but his final cross was aved by goalkeeper George Abine.

Victor Dawa of Gombe United tried his luck from outside the box but the effort sailed over the bar.A brilliant attacking move by Akwa United saw Cyril Olisema locating Uche Collins who laid the ball first-time to Moses Effiong on the left but the winger’s strike was deflected out.First ended 1-0 in favour of the homers.

Winger Wisdom Fernando was introduced in place of Emmanuel Ogwuka.

There was a clear chance for Akwa United. Uche Collins headed Taiye Muritala’s left-footed cross inches off the post.

Usman Abbas should have levelled up for Gombe United.

The forward misses a chance as he headed a cross from Taiye Yusuf over the bar.

There wasn’t much to report in the second stanza.

It was a victorious outing at the Nest of Champions for Akwa United.

What it means?

Akwa United are now fourth on the ladder with 16 points from a possible 24, while Gombe United have are seventh with seven points from eight games.
