Sunshine Queens head coach, Abimbola Oladimeji has commended his players and coaching crew for a job well done at the just concluded 2023 Nigeria Women Football League Championship played in Ikenne, Ogun State.
This is just as he thanked the Ondo State Government, Management of the team led by Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Bamidele Ologunloluwa, state Football Association (FA) led by the executive member of Nigeria Football Federation Otunba Dele Ajayi and the chairman of interim management committee of NPFL, Gbenga Elegbeleye and other football stakeholders in the state for their supports and motivation.
He added that the words of encouragement and criticism back home motivated him and his crew to give in their best at the championship.
He said: “I sincerely thank all our supporters both home and abroad for standing with us during and after the competition, we received all criticism and their words of encouragement positively which raised our spirit in the cause of the competition.”
Abimbola explained that Sunshine Queens played five matches, won four and lost one to the host team in a controversial manner.
He added that the majority of the current team players paraded at the championship were secondary schools student who has never played at that level, adding that the Sunshine Queens’ highest goal scorer Moyinoluwa Owolabi just finished her WAEC.
According to him, “most of the players that played for the club last season have joined other teams,that was why we went back to the grassroots to bring the young players together.”
The head coach who refused to speak on the final match of the Championship, said fans at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne who watched both group A and B last matches saw what transpired.
“You are all journalists, you watched the game too, write what you saw in the final match”, he said.
“Against all odds, we were second in our group, same 12 points with Lakeside Queens who were ahead of us with goal difference.”, he said.
