Nayef Aguerd’s first goal for West Ham earned them a crucial win that left fellow strugglers Southampton rooted at the bottom of the Premier League.
Aguerd headed home Thilo Kehrer’s free-kick but had to wait more than three minutes to celebrate after a lengthy check by the video assistant referee.
West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen hit the crossbar before Southampton’s Paul Onuachu headed against the bar late on.
The win lifted West Ham out of the relegation zone and up to 14th.
Paul Onuachu was introduced in 72 minutes while his compatriot Seyi Aribo was an unused substitute
