The Atlas Lions of Morocco caused the latest shock at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar after beating Belgium 2-0 in their second group game on Sunday.

Abdelhamid Sabiri’s inswinging free-kick to beat Belgium keeper Thibaut Courtois at the near post in the 73rd minute to give Morocco the lead.

But Morocco capped an outstanding second-half performance after Zakaria Aboukhlal fired Hakim Ziyech’s pass into the net in stoppage time.

And thousands of Morocco supporters, who had already created a boisterous scene, erupted in wild jubilation in the Al Thumama Stadium stands.Portugal in 1986,Scotland in 1998, and Belgium in 2022.

It is only Morocco’s third-ever win at a World Cup from 18 games, and it comes against the 2nd-ranked team in the world. What a moment for Walid Regragui, who only took over six games ago and has his new side on the brink of qualifying for the last 16 for the first time ever. After the game, Belgium manager Roberto Martinez said:

It’s a difficult result. The first goal affected the outcome a lot. It’s a dead ball, we couldn’t get our game going and it’s a game we need to understand.“

We need to react into the next game, that’s what happens in the World Cup.

The situation at the free-kick was the way we have been defending for six years. It’s a good ball, but it’s nothing to do with our setup.

”The result means Morocco move above Belgium to the top of Group F with four points, with Croatia and Canada meeting later on Sunday
