Senegal have secured progression to the round of 16 of on going Qatar 2022 FIFA World cup.
The West Africa side earned a hard fought 2-1 victory over their South American counterpart Ecuador on Tuesday evening at the Khalifa International Stadium Al Rayyan.
Ismaila Sarr gave the African Champions the lead from the penalty spot just before the half time break, Moses Caicedo drew Ecuador level in the 67th minutes before Chelsea’s Khalidou Koulibaly restored their lead three minutes after.
The Taraga Lions finished second in Group A with six points after two wins and one defeat to become the first African nation to progress to the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2022.
Netherlands finished with seven (7) points after two wins and one draw, while Ecuador 4pts and host Qatar 0pts finished in third and fourth position respectively.
The last time reached the second round of the FIFA Worldcup was at the 2002 Korea/ Japan Worldcup where they were knocked out by Turkey.
